It took a quick glance earlier this year at the wall inside Penticton and District Search and Rescue’s main building for Saturday, May 27, at Gyro Park to happen.
“Established in 1973,” it reads.
And from there, members at PENSAR knew something special had to be planned to honour 50 years of the volunteer-based rescue team.
That’s according to the group’s manager Randy Brown, who helped organize Saturday afternoon’s half-a-century-anniversary party at Gyro Park.
“It’s great to see everyone here learning more about what we do and celebrating the day,” said Brown, who’s spent the last 11 years at PENSAR.
The party featured a live band, BBQ, and interactive games.
A favourite for those in attendance was the dunk tank, which saw members of the group take the pledge by donation.
“Today is about connecting people with each other and having fun,” Brown said.
PENSAR also held a 50/50 draw at the event for the first time, with the winner walking away with more than $700 in their pocket.
Brown says that although there have been PENSAR celebrations in the past, Saturday marked the group’s biggest bash yet.
It’s been a busy year thus far for the search and rescue group.
Members responded to two different calls on April 25: one involving a missing senior and another that required the rescue of an ATV user who had got stranded in deep snow northeast of Summerland.
