For eight years, Vernon residents have joined together on the last Sunday in January to raise money and awareness for families impacted by dementia at the Investors Group Walk for Memories.
Now, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is calling for volunteer leaders to help plan and coordinate this cherished community event in 2013.
“The Investors Group Walk for Memories has long been a grassroots, community-driven event,” said Jean Blake, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Volunteer committees in communities around the province bring life and heart to the event, which goes a long way to aid the fight against Alzheimer’s disease while honouring local families on the dementia journey.”
Participants join the walk to celebrate the life of someone who has been impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia, and to raise money for Alzheimer Society of B.C. programs and services in their community that can help. Money raised is also invested into research for a cure. In 2012, the Vernon Walk raised an impressive $28,000 for the cause.
Volunteers take the lead in their community by organizing the logistics of the walk, as well as promoting the event locally and recruiting participant teams. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. provides training and on-going support.
