Kids given a sporting chance

B.C. contributes to KidSport program

The provincial government is helping even more young British Columbians participate in community-based sport by investing $400,000 in KidSport in 2011-12.

More than 1,500 children and youth will benefit from this funding through KidSport, which provides financial assistance to youth who face financial barriers preventing them from participating in sports.

“When children participate in sport, they learn new skills that can last a lifetime and become part of a community,” said Ida Chong, community development minister.

Grants averaging $200 help cover the cost of registration fees for one season of sport.

Since 2006-07, the province has invested more than $1.8 million in KidSport B.C.
