Reeling in a fish can be difficult for someone inexperienced.

On Aug. 7, the Kalamalka and Shuswap Fly Fishing Societies are teaming up to provide kids with the annual Learn to Fish program.  At the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., kids 15 and under can learn important fishing techniques.

“People also don’t need to have their own fishing gear,” said executive director Shona Bruce.

Fishing gear or not, this family event will host a variety of activities.

The point of Learn to Fish is to educate kids about proper fishing techniques to prevent unnecessary fish deaths as well as help them develop an interest for fishing.

“You see dead fish floating around the lakes (which could have been prevented),” said Kal fly fishing member Perry Wainright.

There will also be a bug soup provided by the centre, proper fish-handling demonstrations, information sessions and a barbecue by donation provided by the Enderby Lions Club.

The event has been going since 2010 with the exception of the previous two years due to a mud slide at the facility.

In previous years, around 120 to 150 kids have attended.

The pond will have around 500 fish ready for the kids.

The centre is located on Mabel Lake Road in Enderby.
