Cadet Elijah Nahirny, of Vernon, was selected as the top cadet in 27 Platoon during his three-week basic expedition course at the Vernon Cadet Training Centre.

Nahirny is a member of 1705 Royal Canadian Army Cadets (B.C. Dragoons) of Vernon. The corps parades each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Nahirny and 56 other army cadets attended the three-week basic expedition course which provides cadets with the fundamentals of expedition training. Activities include navigation, a five-day expedition where the cadets hike, mountain bike and canoe on the Thompson Plateau.

During the summer, more than 1,770 army, navy and air cadets from Western Canada will have spent up to six weeks at the training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.

The cadet program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Cadets make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship.
