Tom Ouchi, of Ringo-en Orchards, placed third in the aurora golden gala category at this year’s National Apple Competition

A Vernon orchardist grows some of the best apples in Canada.

Tom Ouchi, of Ringo-en Orchards, placed third in the aurora golden gala category at this year’s National Apple Competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ont.

First place went to a Naramata grower while second place was presented to an Oliver orchardist.

Ouchi has been farming in Vernon’s Bella Vista area since 1992, and he took over from his father who had started the farm in the 1950s.

Ouchi grows ambrosia, aurora golden gala, McIntosh, Spartan and gala apple varieties. He also has his own vegetable and market garden.

B.C. apples captured the top spots in the ambrosia, golden delicious, aurora golden gala and heaviest apple categories at the National Apple Competition in Toronto

“B.C. apples did great again this year in the national apple competition, a fitting tribute and a finale to the B.C. Fruit Growers Association celebration of its 125th year,” said Fred Steele, BCFGA president.
