Local pens poems

A local man is sharing his struggles, and triumphs, living with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Using the power of the written word, a local man is sharing his struggles, and triumphs, living with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Vernon’s Carson Holtz, 33, has written Simple Day and Long Nights, which he will be signing copies of at Coles Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

“It’s a book of poetry about how I’ve been doing these past few months,” said Holtz, who has sold 40 copies so far just though word of mouth.

Holtz was diagnosed with FASD at eight-years-old but he has learned to cope with the symptoms which include trouble remembering things and disorganization.

Along with penning more than 1,000 poems in relation to FASD, Holtz has also been an advocate for prevention of the disease.

He says it is 100 per cent preventable and urges pregnant women to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy.
