Long-serving principal set to retire

After close to two decades of leadership at Vernon Christian School, Larry Simpson will retire as principal this summer.

“The school has been truly blessed by Larry’s leadership and commitment to excellence in education for the past 17 years,” said board chairman Darren Witt. “He leaves a legacy of dedication and service to his students, teachers and entire school community.”

Witt said the long-serving principal of the elementary and high school campuses leaves behind a newly built, technologically advanced high school campus, an elementary campus that offers a pre-school option, a truly outstanding faculty and staff and a talented and diverse student body.

“Larry’s leadership has been instrumental in leading the school through much growth and positive change over the last several years, one result being that Vernon Christian School is presently the highest ranked school for academics in the Vernon area,” he said.

When asked about his decision to retire, Simpson said the board and staff had always envisioned a school that was a community from kindergarten to Grade 12.

“I am very satisfied to that end. Nothing is accomplished without those in front, beside and behind you,” he said. “We are in a great place to move on positively with a great group. It’s time to stay at home and make breakfast for my wife.

“But I went into education for kids, and that is what I’ll miss the most.”

Vernon Christian School is an independent and inter-denominational school delivering the curriculum mandated by the BC Ministry of Education in conjunction with the school’s motto of preparing kids to have a Heart for God and A Mind for Truth.
