Lots to do downtown

Summer is back in Vernon and the Downtown Vernon Association is excited about the upcoming season.

Summer is back in Vernon and the Downtown Vernon Association is excited about the upcoming season.

The beginning of July and all throughout the summer, the DVA brings some exciting events to downtown Vernon.

Every week in Justice Park, Jammin’ in Justice is a live music event that brings together local artists like Michael Painchaud, Mat Duffus, Sophia Mae and many more, who will be performing in the park as you take a shopping break or enjoy lunch.

“Bring the family and soak up some sun while listening to some groovy tunes,” said Dory Geelkerken, with the DVA.

Jammin’ in Justice starts July 6 and continues weekly until Aug. 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Civic Sounds kicks off July 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Civic Plaza.

This ongoing concert series runs every Thursday until Aug. 25.

“Join more than 1,000 people and enjoy a relaxed evening listening to music with family and friends in our beautiful downtown,” said Geelkerken.

“Listen to The Young’uns, The Keys, Tasman Jude and many more.”

Also returning this year are the Guided Mural Tours. Partnering with the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives, tours take place every Tuesday and Friday July 12 to Sept. 9 (no tours Aug. 26 and 30), guided by Gabriel Newman.

“I’m really excited to be able to offer a tour downtown,” he said.

“There are so many great stories and murals that by combining them I hope to bring Vernon’s unique history to life.”

Starting at 9 a.m., participants are asked to meet on the museum steps, no pre-booking or registration required, for an information-packed tour lasting about 90 minutes.

“The tour is a pay-what-you-want tour and your support is greatly appreciated,” said Geelkerken.

The Curbside Night Market continues to run the last Friday of every month, when 30th Avenue is turned into a downtown block party with patio cafés, sidewalks sales and live music.

“Enjoy an evening in downtown from May until August from 6 to 9 p.m.,” said Gelkerken.
