Vernon is invited to help create new beginnings for a refugee family coming to Vernon.

St. John’s Lutheran Church is partnering with Hillview Elementary to raise $30,000 to bring a refugee family to town.

Efforts include a fundraising pig roast lunch (Luau) Sunday, April 10 at noon at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Along with the pig roast lunch, there will be a talent show and silent auction/cake auction. Hawaiian attire is optional.

Donations of silent auction items, cake auction items and cash donations are greatly appreciated.

Karin Vassberg, fundraising coordinator, says her 11-year-old daughter wanted to help with the refugee program and at the same time her church was looking at raising funds for a family.

Vassberg brought her church’s plans up at a Hillview PAC meeting, which was well received.

“The principal seemed quite excited, then she spoke to the teachers, and asked if a couple classes wanted to help out and the teachers said they all wanted to help out and it would be great experience for everyone,” said Vassberg, of how the school and church are uniting efforts to create a new beginning for a refugee family.

Tickets to the fundraiser are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 13 and under. There are limited tickets available, so pick them up in advance at St. John’s (5151 Alain Rd.). For more information contact Karin Vassberg at 250-540-4879.
