Horse racing enthusiasts should be aware of some significant changes to this season’s schedule.
The dates for Vernon Race Days at Kin Race Track have changed from Aug. 20 and 21 to Aug. 21 and Sept. 11.
“The back-to-back dates were never the first choice for the society and we have been applying to change the dates ever since,” said Ed Woolley, Okanagan Equestrian Society president.
“The approval was granted recently.”
The dates were established as part of an agreement between Interior race tracks and Hastings Park in Vancouver to avoid non-competing schedules.
“While still limited to two days as opposed to the usual three, the number of races per day and the average purse per race has been increased this year,” said Woolley.
“As a result, the total number of races is expected to be only one less than last year.”
The gates at the 43rd Avenue track open at noon. with parade to the post set for 1:15 p.m.
Admission is $3 at the gate.
The society is still looking for volunteers to help put on this year’s races.
“Anyone interested can contact the society by going to its website at www.vernonhorseracing.com,” said Woolley.
About 1,300 people per day attended Vernon Race Days in 2010.
