Nominations sought for community awards

The North Okanagan is full of leaders.

And The Morning Star wants to hear about them.

Nominations are now being accepted for the second annual Community Leader Awards.

“Nominate someone who makes a major or positive contribution to our community,” said Morning Star publisher Ian Jensen. “Tell us their story and let’s celebrate their dedication.”

Awards will be handed out in 10 categories:

Coach: Makes a positive contribution to their sport; is exemplary in developing skills and confidence in participants;

Mentor: Makes a positive contribution by being a true leader. An influential counsellor, teacher or educator that provides support or sponsorship;

Courage: This person has risen above adversity or formidable challenges to become a success;

Above And Beyond: Makes a positive contribution to their community through their work, going beyond the requirements of their job to support the community;

Emergency Service: Goes the extra mile, over and above the call of duty; exemplary in the area of emergency services; unselfishly shoulders enormous responsibility;

Service Organization Volunteer: Makes a contribution to the community by volunteering their time to a community service organization; is well thought of and significantly relied upon by others;

Volunteer: This individual volunteers their time to a variety of causes, dedicated to making a difference in several initiatives;

Youth Volunteer: Makes a positive contribution to youth or a youth that makes a positive contribution in the community; someone who is depended upon and committed to provide direction;

Environmental Leader: Champions environmentally friendly initiatives; inspires others to be ‘green’ by being a leader in ecologically sound practices;

Community Builder: Someone who has taken the initiative to engage a variety of local residents in an innovative or new community project or event; may assist different groups to work together.

To nominate a person for a Community Leader Award, write an approximately 800-to-1,200 word (1 to 1.5 pages typed) submission and include information such as length of time nominee has spent in the community; specific examples of the work and/or contribution he/she has made; community associations and memberships.

Provide references of other individuals who may be able to provide further support on the nominee’s behalf.

Submissions must be in by April 25.

The awards will be handed out at a special evening in June.
