Paddlers converge on beach

Inaugural standup paddleboard event takes place in Coldstream

Kalavida Surf Shop kicks off the season with the first in a series of standup paddleboard events.

The Eagle Run takes place Saturday at Kal Beach from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The season opener includes recreational and competitive races for both newbies and experienced paddlers along a spectator-friendly course between Kal Beach and the Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary,” said Michelle Mitchell, with Kalavida.

“In an effort to involve kids and youth, this year’s schedule now includes shorter distance races for groms (ages 13 and under) and junior (14-18 years), making the event fun for the entire family.”

For those looking to develop new skills and hone their technique, Kalavida is also hosting a SUP Skills Clinic prior to the race and for the general public. There are also free demos throughout the day.

“The Okanagan region has gained the reputation as one of Canada’s top standup paddle destinations and Vernon is home to one of the strongest communities of paddlers for all types of boards and boats,” said Mitchell.

The inaugural Eagle Run will also serve as a warm-up to the upcoming Kalamalka Classic SUP Festival June 19 to 24 on Kalamalka Lake.

“The Kal Classic has grown to become Canada’s largest SUP event and with a strategic partnership in Tourism Vernon, the third annual gathering now attracts regional, national and international attendance,” said Mitchell.

As part of an ongoing commitment to the environment, proceeds will be donated to the Society for the Protection of Kalamalka Lake.
