PHOTOS: Annual FireSmart Family Day sparks fire preparedness in West Kelowna

Children had the chance to spread a fire hose and sit in a fire truck

Ahead of summertime and fire season, the West Kelowna Fire Department hosted its annual Firesmart Family Day on Saturday, May 27.

The purpose of the day was for families to enjoy all the activities involved while learning about the FireSmart program, all types of fire safety, and home emergency preparedness. The fire department presented demonstrations of some of the practices they use in their work and many companies were on hand with booths about home and fire safety. One of the demonstrations included lighting some scrubs on fire to show how fast a fire can spread.

Children in attendance also had the chance to spread a fire hose and get a look inside a fire truck. On top of meeting local firefighters, kids also got the chance to meet Sparky the Fire Dog and Ember the FireSmart Fox.

All the festivities took place at Fire Hall No. 31 on Old Okanagan Highway.
