Greater Vernon is going green.
In celebration of International Car Free Day, the city is offering free programs Thursday to encourage residents to park their vehicles.
A full day of activities is being offered to help increase citizen safety, overall health and well-being.
A pole walking clinic and pedestrian safety clinic kicks off the activities Thursday. An expert from Stussi Sport will be on hand to cover effective and efficient pole walking techniques to enhance your fitness and safety. Bring your poles (some poles will be on-hand to try) to Polson Park for one of two clinics – 12:15 to 1 p.m. or 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Pre-registration is required by emailing dsbreception@vernon.ca or calling 250-550-3634.
Two-wheeled commuters can gain some pedal-power at the bicycle skills and safety course at city hall from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The three-hour workshop will focus on learning how to gain more confidence as a cyclist in intersections, how to brake, signal and ride more efficiently and effectively on your commutes. Bring your bike, helmet and appropriate cycling attire (a bike light and reflective clothing are also recommended). Pre-registration is required: dsbreception@vernon.ca or 250-550-3634.
Experts from Community Policing will be on hand for motorized mobility scooter training at the Schubert Centre from 1 to 4 p.m. The theory and practical session will help participants become safer and more defensive drivers with confidence. Pre-register by calling 250-550-7840.
Mobility-challenged residents interested in accessing the bus can hop on board a free travel orientation Thursday and learn about transit routes. To pre-register call 250-545-7721.
