From Mabel Lake to Mara, life revolves around the Shuswap River.
That’s why a number of festivities are planned for B.C. Rivers Day Sunday at Belvedere Park in Enderby.
“This event offers residents the opportunity to honour, celebrate and heal the Shuswap River,” said Madison Giesbrecht, the Enderby Chamber of Commerce’s sustainability co-ordinator.
“Rivers Day seeks to raise public understanding of rivers and the many benefits they provide us. It is a day when we all give back to the river. I encourage everybody to come out and contribute.”
The primary activity is cleaning up garbage along the river and volunteers will start arriving at 9 a.m.
“Volunteers may participate by walking, canoeing, kayaking or boating the river with clean-up materials,” said Giesbrecht.
Splats’in First Nations Coun. Randy Williams, Enderby Mayor Dee Wejr, and Area F director Herman Halvorson will give opening remarks, while Williams will also provide a traditional Splats’in song.
Educational displays about the river and the environment will be located in Belvedere Park and there will be entertainment starting at 3 p.m.
The Sounds of Light Multicultural Society will also be holding a salmon painting workshop with artist Jamie Seward. The workshop runs from 1 to 3 p.m.
