School’s spirit helps win Vernon Winter Carnival parade honour

St. James School’s Minecraft theme picks up Christel Cam Memorial Award for Best Parade Spirit

St. James School has cashed in on its impressive Vernon Winter Carnival spirit.

The elaborately built Minecraft parade float has won the Christel Cam Memorial Award for Parade Entry with the Most Spirit.

“Hundreds of votes came in over the weekend, and we are so pleased to award the school with the $500 cash prize and trophy,” said Carnival executive director Kris Fuller.

The trophy is for Best Parade Spirit and awarded to the entry contributing the most fun, enthusiasm, zeal, and passion to the parade.

The theme for the 64th Vernon Winter Carnival is Games, and Minecraft is a video game made up of blocks, creatures, and community.

The award is named in memory of a longtime Vernon Winter Carnival volunteer. Christel Cam oversaw the parade and Bandarama, as well as looking after trophy portfolios.

She died in 2004.
