Seniors’ Week, June 5-9, celebrates seniors and their many contributions - providing an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the integral part seniors play in communities across British Columbia.

“Up until now, Senior’s Week has not been celebrated in Vernon, but that is all about to change,” said Leighton Byfield, general manager of Orchard Valley Retirement Living.

The Halina Centre, NexusBC Community Resource Centre, The Hamlet’s at Vernon, Orchard Valley Retirement Residences and Parkwood Retirement Resort have banded together to offer Vernon seniors a week of celebration.

From June 5-8, a different event each day will be held throughout the city, sponsored by the above groups.

The fun begins Monday, June 5 at NexusBC Community Resource Centre with a Frauds and Scams Workshop at 10 a.m., High Tea and Antique Toy viewing from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Personal Safety Workshop at 1 p.m. and Emergency Preparedness Workshop at 2 p.m. Call 250-545-0585 to RSVP.

Orchard Valley hosts a barbecue Tuesday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (no RSVP is required).

A Spring Market pops up at The Hamlets Wednesday, June 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. (no RSVP required).

A Movie Night takes place Thursday, June 8 at Parkwood Retirement Resort at 6:30 p.m. with snacks and beverages provided. RSVP to Marcy at prrmarketing@regencyresorts.ca.

The full day of fun concludes Seniors’ Week Friday, June 9 at the Greater Vernon Recreation Centre with a fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ($2 suggested entry fee) with a trade show, entertainment and door prizes. Beverages and snacks will be offered in the morning and a catered lunch will be offered in the afternoon. The day concludes with Bingo at 6 p.m. (19 plus).

Those wanting to take part in the trade show with a booth and door prize basket can do so for $50.

Sponsors and volunteers are also sought.
