It was only a matter of time before the cross-country ski world collided with beer, chocolate and DJs.

From Thursday to Sunday, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club and SilverStar Mountain Resort are hosting the first ever XC105 Nordic Festival to celebrate the start of the 2017-18 season and to showcase the largest daily groomed trail network in North America.

The neighbouring ski areas are jointly hosting a series of activities that will appeal to beginner through advanced cross-country skiers.

“Fun is our mission,” said Sovereign Lake general manager Troy Hudson. “This is a great opportunity to explore the 105 kilometres of trail we [Sovereign Lake Nordic Club] share with SilverStar Mountain Resort while having a blast doing so.”

Activities include the BeerCanBeiner, which involves skiing short distances in between craft beer stations; the Turkey Trot, which allows skiers to ski a point-to-point distance from Sovereign Lake to the SilverStar Village sampling chocolate along the way; night skiing with a DJ, where skiers and electronic music enthusiasts alike will come together for an evening of fun skiing relays and dance in the Sovereign Lake Lodge.

Other events taking place during the XC105 Nordic Festival include Ski with Elite, Ski Yoga and Be a Biathlete (for an hour).

Two-day and four-day dual area ski passes can be purchased online for $55 and $99 respectively. Details about the XC105 Nordic Festival can be found on the Sovereign Lake website.

The largest cross-country ski club in Canada according to Cross Country Canada, Sovereign Lake Nordic Club was nominated by USA Today as one of the Top 10 Cross-Country Ski Resorts in North America and is currently sitting in sixth position.

Sovereign Lake was host to a FIS World Cup in 2005 and the Sparkling Hill World Masters in 2011. The club is hosting over 1,000 elite skiers on Dec. 9-10 for the Haywood NorAm and Sprints / USSA SuperTour races.
