Skiers conquer slick loppet

More than 250 skiers toed the start line for the 37th annual Sovereign Lake Cross-Country Ski Loppet.

More than 250 skiers toed the start line for the 37th annual Sovereign Lake Cross-Country Ski Loppet.

Snowfall and warming temperatures made for very fast conditions, allowing Dudley Coulter, formerly of the National Development Centre in Thunder Bay, and a recent import to Vernon, to claim the overall title in the 30-kilometre event.

Coutler posted a new course record of one hour and 13 minutes.

The overall women’s title was won by two-time U.S. Olympian Laura McCabe, of Methow Valley, Wash., in one hour and 28 minutes.

Participants taking on the challenge of this endurance event came from all over southern B.C., as well as out-of-province destinations such as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Washington State and Great Britain.

Local athletes achieving podium finishes included: Sierra Munroe 2nd (7 and under girls, 2-km), Eva Rosen 3rd (7 and under girls, 2-km), Nolan Stiven 1st (7 and under boys, 2-km), Dawson Bond 2nd (7 and under boys, 2-km), Cole O’Connor 3rd (7 and under boys, 2-km), Mitchell Bond 3rd (8-10 yr boys, 5-km), Paige Latta 2nd (11-13 yr girls, 5-km), Ian Oliphant 2nd (11-13 yr boys, 5-km), Emma Corbett 3rd (14-17 yr girls, 10-km), Finn Plummer 2nd (14-17 yr boys, 10-km), Christopher Dlouhy (14-17 yr boys, 10-km), Samantha Loewen 1st (Rec. Women 15-km), Brock Garvin 2nd (Rec.
