Knights of Columbus St.James Council members George Doncaster (from left), Vernon Doncaster, and Grand Knight Dale Hofer present more than $4,200 from the Knights' annual Charity Appeal to Special Olympics Vernon members Marc Fisher, Sydney Feeney, and Darren Fisher. The money will be used to purchase equipment for a new sports program for the local Special Olympics group.

Floorball is a game similar to floor hockey.

It's played indoors in a gymnasium, but uses a special type of stick and ball.

Thanks to a donation from the Knights of Columbus St. James Council 4949, Special Olympics Vernon will be able to introduce the new sport to its athletes.

"Floorball is a new program that we are starting, and we needed to get some equipment," said Marc Fisher with Special Olympics Vernon, following the presentation of a cheque for $4,244 from the Knights.

Council Grand Knight Dale Hofer made the presentation to Fisher, Sydney Feeney, and Special Olympian athlete Darren Fisher at the St. James Catholic Church. The money was raised through the K of C annual charity appeal.

"The appeal involves the whole province," said Hofer. "Then money is split among many local charities."

The Knights of Columbus' 63rd annual Charity Appeal is now underway, and one lucky person will win a Ford Escape Hybrid vehicle, the grand prize. Second prize is $25,000; third prize is $10K and fourth prize picks up $5,000. There will also be $1,000 prizes awarded from fifth to 14th place.

Early bird draws take place Oct. 21, Nov. 4, Nov. 18, and Dec. 2. Those draws will see two prizes of $1,000 each awarded.

The grand prize draw for the Ford Escape Hybrid will take place precisely at 8:01 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The local Knights will be at the Village Green Centre daily through to the middle of November with tickets, available to those 19 and older.
