An opportunity to catch some of the fastest-four-legged creatures in action is coming to town.
The Whippet Club of B.C. is hosting the season-opener Lure Course Field Trial May 14 and 15 in Lavington on Langford Road.
“It’s the very first try of the season,” said Verena von Eichborn, one of the event organizers.
Everyone is invited to check out the trials between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“Last time it was really neat, lots of families were coming and they were betting – not for money, just for fun,” said von Eichborn.
Well-behaved dogs on a leash are also welcome as spectators.
The two-day event will host approximately 30 dogs from the speediest breeds (known as sighthounds) – Afghan hound, whippet, greyhound, borzoi, Irish wolfhound, and Scottish deerhound.
The greyhounds are known as the swiftest of the breeds, reaching speeds of 75-kilometres-an-hour.
Since the races might be a bit of a blur, spectators can get a closer look at the dogs in the Field Trial Confirmation Show Saturday after the races.
It is also a good time for anyone interested in sighthounds to connect with other owners as Lavington is trying to establish a training group. For information, call von Eichborn at 250-260-3109.
To get to the races, follow the signs from Highway 6 – turn right on Park Lane, left on to Learmouth Road, turn left on Reid Road, uphill on to Bluenose Road, and just after Whitevale Road turns to the left, turn right on to Langford Road (a gravel road) and proceed 200 metres to the field entrance on the right.
