The Tim Hortons North Okanagan team and athlete of the year will be announced today at Lakers Clubhouse on Cummins Road.

The public is urged to attend the ceremony (6 to 8 p.m.) with light refreshments served.

The awards have been celebrating local sport achievements since 1993 when NHLer Brent Gilchrist was honoured.

Previous winners include speed skater Connie Kapak, who is currently ranked No. 4 in Canada, and the national Junior A hockey champion Vernon Vipers.

The award winners were chosen by committee members Mel Briggeman, John Topping, Kevin Mitchell, Betty Selin, Peter McIntyre and Shannon Mazereeuw.

“The athlete nominees were impressive with many competing internationally in their sport,” said Mazereeuw, Sport Program Leader with PacificSport Okanagan.

“And the volunteer nominees showed countless hours spent improving sport in our community.”

A new Female in Sport bursary of $250, sponsored by Smart & Associates, will be awarded to a female who has empowered women and girls to participate and be active.
