The North Okanagan Cycling Society’s popular Thursday Night Toonie Rides have been drawing a variety of cycling enthusiasts to the many trails in the region.

Thursday evenings in Vernon have certainly become something to look forward to if you like to ride your bike.

The North Okanagan Cycling Society (NOCS) has been hosting its Thursday Night Toonie Ride for years, but the popular weekly ride has gained significant traction this spring, attracting more than 150 riders since early May.

The group ride includes a one-to-two hour long flagged route followed by hot eats, cold treats and good beats.

“Riders beginner through advanced are encouraged to come out,” said the society’s Dudley Coulter. “There is something for every type of rider, whether it is exploring new trails, learning new skills or to socializing after the ride.”

All you have to do is be a member of NOCS and drop a toonie in the jar to attend these events.

Each Thursday, a bike shop and local business combine forces to map out an awesome route and provide delicious food.

The next ride, June 2, is at Silver Star Bike Park, sponsored by Silver Star and Courtview Dental at 6 p.m.

Last week’s ride was sponsored by Sun Country Cycle with Priest Valley Physio and Domestikait serving up a Greek feast afterward.

The week before, the toonie ride was sponsored by Skyride and Nixon Wenger Lawyers.

Our Thursday Night Toonie Rides have gained a lot of traction this spring, it has become a family affair,” said Coulter. “We think this is due to a wider variety of trails in the region and an increase in popularity of the sport.”

Upcoming toonie rides include Thursday, June 9, at Kal Lake Provincial Park (Twin Bays, sponsored by Skyride and Kalavida Surf Shop) and June 16 at Ellison Provincial Park (sponsored by Sun Country Cycle and Ratio Coffee.

Those who are interested in the events or becoming a society member can go to okcycling.com and view the calendar of events.
