A community effort is driving ahead to ensure every child has something special to unwrap Christmas morning.
Vernon Toyota has teamed up with Silver Star Mountain Resort and The Morning Star to kick off a toy drive today through Dec. 15.
Toyota will have a red Tundra parked at various events and locations around town for community members to help fill the box with new, unwrapped toys for the Vernon Salvation Army.
The Tundra, along with a fleet of red trucks, will primarily be parked at Toyota, but is also making a trip up to Silver Star for opening day Thursday.
“Once we fill the back of the Tundra we’ll move onto other vehicles,” said Scott Robb, with Vernon Toyota.
“By Dec. 15, hopefully we’ll have a convoy of vehicles (which will be decked out in antlers) with Santa driving the Tundra truck in behind.”
The community toy drive will benefit low-income families in the region who access the Salvation Army food bank.
While picking up their Christmas hampers, families will also be able to pick out toys to put under the tree for their kids.
“There’s so many families the Salvation Army supports but a lot of these kids don’t get Christmas,” said Ian Jensen, Morning Star publisher.
With local realtors already successfully undertaking an annual food drive, Robb says the toy drive was a perfect fit.
And the name fits too.
“You kind of get the word-play there – TOYota,” adds Jensen.
The community is urged to help fill the Tundra and its fleet by dropping toys off at Toyota.
The local automobile dealer will also be donating a gift in the buyer’s name for every new or used purchased from its lot.
