A community art book project is welcoming children in the area to put their creative skills on display.
The Vernon & District Immigrant & Community Services Society (VDICSS) in partnership with the Literacy Society of the North Okanagan have invited elementary aged children in the greater Vernon area to an afternoon of games and crafting Saturday, May 14.
The first session, May 7, saw youth share their vision of who the children are in their community and how they see themselves represented here. The art will then be compiled and published into a community book entitled Who are the Children in our Community? for all to access in the resource section of the local Vernon branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, in order to reach as many people as possible in the most equitable way.
“We have been so inspired and impressed by what the diverse range of children who have already participated have created for the book. We saw this project as an inclusive participant led exploratory look at representation in our community through the lens of young children’s perspectives. These kids took that idea to a level we as adults could not have imagined,” said Amelia Sirianni, director of operations at VDICSS. “They shared insight into how they feel as children, how they perceive their place among adults, and what makes them special and important members of our society.”
If you would like your child to participate in the free event, email info@literacysociety.ca to register. The next session is from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Literacy Society - 4705A 29th St. No previous art experience necessary. Children of all backgrounds and abilities are encouraged to participate.
“Children create the best art and we’re looking forward to showcasing our local talent. Experienced and qualified educators with completed criminal record checks are on hand to supervise the fun. Snacks and refreshments will be provided too,” said Debbie Nurse, executive director of the Literacy Society.
The Who are the Children in our Community? project is made possible through the financial support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation Anti-Racism Fund.
