Pizza Hut Restaurants LP has raised $59,447 for the 2016 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes.

This year, Vernon was the second-highest Pizza Hut raising $3,291.

A total of 46 Pizza Huts across B.C. participated with teams from Grandview, Vernon and Maple Ridge leading the group with the highest numbers.

“We are very proud of our restaurant teams and our customers overwhelming support for this very important cause” said Mike Cyr, President of PH Restaurants LP.

“Pizza Hut strongly believes in getting involved locally which is why it chose an organization like JDRF.”

The money raised came from customers, managers and team members who purchased paper sneakers and participated in local fundraising events leading up to the Walk in June. This marks the ninth year Pizza Hut has backed the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes and brings the total funds raised to more than $200,000.

JDRF is dedicated to preventing, treating and finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

There are 300,000 Canadians living with Type 1 diabetes and the estimated cost to the health care system will be as high as $16 billion by 2020.

JDRF has also recognized PH restaurants for their fundraising efforts this year, a 21 per cent increase from the previous year.

PH Restaurants LP was awarded the 2016 STEPPIN’ UP Corporate Achievement Award.

“We are incredibly touched and inspired by the ongoing commitment and passion the leadership of PH Restaurants embodies and how that has translated to their employees across the province,” said Shelina Dilgir, manager of fundraising and development for TELUS Walk.
