Between Aug. 6 and 12, Vernon resident Mari Cebuliak will participate in the Freedom Climb to bring awareness of trafficked and oppressed women around the world.

The climb will see Cebuliak head to the West Kootenays to climb some of the tallest peaks around Fernie: Castle Mountain, Three Sisters, Heiko’s Trail and Polar Peak.

A project of Operation Mobilization (OM), the Freedom Climb brings hope and transforms lives of women and children who are being exploited, enslaved and trafficked, said Cebuliak.

“Freedom Climb is so much more than climbing a mountain,” said Cebuliak, who works as a counsellor. “It is a way to engage in the global battle against slavery and oppression and to strategically help the women and children it affects. The funds raised will go to preventative projects, development projects and rescue and rehabilitation projects.

“Doing the Freedom Climb is a symbolic gesture to demonstrate the struggle women around the world go through. It is also symbolic of being able to overcome obstacles and rising above circumstances.”

Cebuliak has also raised money for the Wellspring Foundation, which aids education projects in the African nation of Rwanda, four years in a row by participating in long distance cycling events.

“I have a longtime passion for the outdoors, hiking and cycling and raising money for a good cause while pursuing my passion,” said Cebuliak.

A benefit concert to help Cebuliak reach her goals on her Freedom Climb will be held Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Elks Hall. Local band Feet First will perform. Tickets are  available at the Bean Scene or contact Cebuliak at 250-938-3771.
