Yacht club offers holding tank service

Boaters can clean out their holding tanks for free until Oct. 22.

Boaters on Okanagan Lake have a free option to dispose of their waste.

In an effort to keep the lake clean, the Vernon Yacht Club reminds all boaters that they can clean out their holding tanks for free until Oct. 22.

The vacuum pump is located at the yacht club’s dock, near shore, on the side closest to the boat launch.

“We want to encourage people to use it so they don’t just pump it into the lake,” said Craig Williams with the VYC.

Boaters can pull up alongside the dock, tie up and vacuum out their holding tanks. The waste is then directed into the city’s sewer system.

The pump is available until Oct. 22, at which time it will be shut down for winter.

The club recently purchased the new pump, with the help of the Regional District of North Okanagan.

There used to be a minimum $1 fee to use the club’s old pump, but thanks to the support of the regional district, all boaters can now access the pump for free.

“They don’t have to be a member of the yacht club, anybody is welcome to use it,” said Williams.
