Zumba promotes affordable housing

Here’s your chance to shake a leg and more in support of Habitat for Humanity in Vernon.

City Furniture and Zumba with Sareena are sponsoring a zumbathon May 25 to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.

“Our goal is 200-plus participants,” said organizer Sareena Sharma Nickoli

“I’ve had that many before in previous zumba events and know we’re going to shake the rafters.”

Participants are urged to buy tickets early and tickets are available at City Furniture, Diana’s Monogramming, Sutton Realty and participating zumba instructors.

Tickets are $25 and all of the funds generated will go toward raising $300,000 to purchase land for Habitat for Humanity.

Participants are urged to go above and beyond and also seek pledges for their athletic contribution.

A twist on this zumba event is the nomination option.

“We encourage community members to zero in on someone they want to see on the floor shaking it up for affordable housing,” said Sharma Nickoli.

“For $50, you can put anyone on the hook. You can get a whole group pledging their support of newbie zumba movers.”

Once nominated (to nominate someone contact organizers at www.facebook.com/VernonHabitatLand), the chosen individual can either participate or buy out for a minimum of $50.

The event will include door prizes and the first 100 people to buy tickets will receive a free zumba T-shirt.

The zumbathon runs  May 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vernon Recreation Complex.
