The Vernon Film Society is proud to present the acclaimed Irish/Canadian film Maudie Monday May 15 at the Vernon Towne Cinema.
The movie tells the story of Maud Lewis, a well-known folk artist who lived in Nova Scotia, and was filmed in Newfoundland where Lewis’s tiny home was re-created.
Suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, this indomitable woman took a job as housekeeper to a crusty fisherman, and using house paints and boards, Lewis painted bright pictures of life as she saw it — naive and cheerful scenes of the country with cows, trees in blossom, and people going about their daily lives.
Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham, Blue Jasmine) portrays Maud in what some are calling an Oscar-worthy performance, and Ethan Hawke plays her husband who shows initial reluctance to hire her as his housekeeper, then subsequently marries her.
She sold her paintings for a few dollars each and were able to eke out a living. Now, of course, Lewis’s prized paintings sell for thousands of dollars.
“Maudie is a convincing testament to an impressively idiosyncratic spirit who rose above all circumstances,” said Kate Taylor of the Globe and Mail.
