Open letter to North Okanagan-Shuswap MP on meaningful representation

LETTER: We do not understand how presenting this petition to the House after the fact is meaningful representation

MP Arnold;

On Feb. 7,  Parliament voted on motion M86 calling for a Citizens’ Assembly on electoral reform.

On Feb. 26,  three weeks after this vote, you rose in the House to present petitions from 69 residents of your riding asking you to support the motion that had been defeated on Feb. 7.

In other words MPs were not informed, before they voted, that M86 had support from a number of constituents in your riding.

This feels like a slap in the face to those of us who took the time to actively engage in a non-partisan issue.

Your primary job as an MP under our current voting system is to represent all your constituents, not just those whose views accord with your own.

We do not understand how presenting this petition to the House after the fact is meaningful representation.

Sincerely,

Susan Young, Korry Zepick, Grace Kramer, Heather Clay, Richard Pearen, David Derbowka
