Vernon's new BX trail not appropriate for mountain bikes: LETTER

Trails misleading, and dangerous for anyone hiking up/biking down
240620-vms-bx-creek-trail
On hand to officially open the new Upper BX Creek Trail are, from left: Victor Cumming (Greater Vernon Advisory Committee), Brian Guy, GVAC Chair, Bob Fleming (Regional District of North Okanagan), Harold Sellers (president North Okanagan Naturalists Club), Chris Crawford (president North Okanagan Cycling Society), Richard Stranks (president Ribbons of Green), Sean Mulvey (cabin operations), Ryan Elphick (BC Parks, area supervisor, North Okanagan), and Ian McLellan (Rec Sites & Trails BC, recreation officer, Okanagan District).

Re: Upper BX Trail article.

Calling this anything but what it is, a downhill mountain bike trail is negligent.

I am a well experienced trail runner, hiker and I mountain bike also.

I am not a pearl clutcher and have done races on gnarly dangerous terrain.

The thing about this trail is it is single track and has numerous technical corners and blind drops that if you’re hiking, running or biking up (really, anyone biking up this?) and God forbid have a dog on a leash, downhill mountain bikers may not see or hear you in time (nor you them) especially if you are in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

Nobody is in control of the outcome in those situations.

Hence why I think this is the most outrageous thing to call this multiuse and two-way.

It can be run or hiked but the risks with downhillers on it is not worth it.

The trail markers at both ends merely mention “respect” that it is multi-use. Not a good enough warning for the risks.

Send a reporter to hike up this trail on a weekend while mountain bikers are coming down. Better yet take the mayor and all posers in the picture to see how they feel about the upward hike.

Report back.
