An investment worth considering

Vernon Christian School invites parents to Unplugged, a casual on-campus information session Feb. 1
Version 2
Vernon Christian School student Noah Podolski shares his finished project with fellow student Anica Haberstock and principal Matt Driediger.

A commonly held myth in recent decades is that Christian education simply means the freedom to teach creationism, pray during class, and use the Bible as a text book.

Any Christian education that simply tacks spirituality onto the province’s mandated curriculum, perhaps singing some songs, and incorporating Bible verses is not Christian education. Nor is it a great education.

Vernon Christian School has been part of the community since 1977. Since its inception, great work has been done to provide a quality educational choice for local parents that promotes values consistent with their own.

“Our goal at Vernon Christian School is to help students find their place in God’s story to discover their identity in Christ and to be equipped to meet the needs and demands of tomorrow’s workplaces, communities and churches,” said Matt Driediger, VCS principal. “Life in the classrooms and hallways of VCS is about the formation of a community mindset.

“Students are challenged to learn together, serve together, celebrate and even struggle together, they will be both stretched and nurtured, prepared for the journey ahead.”

Grade 11 student Anica Haberstock wholeheartedly agrees.

“Our cross-campus buddy times are a real highlight,” she said, “imagine 350 students from K to 12 getting together to connect and encourage. It really helps to build relationships that we can lean on here and out in the community.”

The approach to all aspects of the educational process at VCS is distinctly Christian. From instruction and assessment to scheduling and discipline, the goal is to disciple students.

“Our community is here to mentor, to walk beside,” said Driediger. “We strive to provide the best in current and relevant educational practices, consistent with biblical truth.”

VCS is a preschool to Grade 12 interdenominational Christian school.

“Regular inquiries have prompted us to host an evening information session on Wednesday,” said Corinne Remple, VCS communications manager. “The big questions parents bring to us include, what sets Christian education apart? How does an education at VCS differ from public school? Will students graduate with the required courses?… a Dogwood certificate? Are trades, music, arts, extracurricular and athletic programs available? And the answer to all of these is yes!”

Unplugged is a casual, comfortable, on-campus information session designed for inquiring parents and supporters of Christian education who may want to know more about VCS. Driediger will provide an overview of Christian education and programs and also host a question-and-answer period. Vernon Christian School is at 6920 Pleasant Valley Rd. Coffee will be provided.
