Armstrong swims in apples

Fresh produce was delivered and then donated to people in the community this summer, thanks to the Armstrong Food Initiative Society

The Armstrong Food Initiative Society has finished up another season of produce sharing.

“We were a little worried to start with because one of our main growers was not planting a big garden and would not be able to contribute produce,” said Jill de la Salle, with the society. “But gradually we received more and more produce until the final days when we were swimming in apples.

“We wondered if we could find homes for all of them. But when we told people to help themselves to as many apples as they wanted they were delighted.”

De la Salle said many who picked up apples said they were going to turn the fall fruit into apple sauce, while others considered either drying them or turning them into apple pie filling.

The average amount of produce brought in each week was 257 pounds, with about 27 people accessing the fruit and vegetables.

 

“Thank you so much to all the people who took the time and energy to bring in the food to share and to those who came to pick it up so it wouldn’t go to waste,” said de la Salle. “And thank you to all the volunteers who showed up on Monday to weigh and distribute the bounty.”
