Armstrong writer Calvin White is celebrating the new year with two new books coming out in the spring.
Vancouver’s Now Or Never Press is publishing White’s second book of poetry, The Bodies and other political poems, and Toronto’s Guernica Editions is publishing Letters from the Land of Fear. The latter is White’s second non-fiction book and covers the year he spent working for Doctors Without Borders as a mental health specialist in central Asia.
White attributes the publication of his poetry book to finding the right editor.
“Poetry takes so many forms, so my style, which so often aims at social justice or recording the lived reality of other humans, is poeto-journalism. Not all editors are receptive to that direction,” he said.
As for the non-fiction book, White was more confident he would find a publisher because a true-life adventure story usually has more commercial possibilities.
Included in that book will be various photographs from the field.
White plans to do separate launches of each book in Vernon, Armstrong, and Salmon Arm in late-March.
