CENTRE POINT: Enjoy the season in the sun

As we anxiously await solstice and ensuing summer fun, there are still a few more chances to catch the finest up and coming local talent.

Those warm summer breezes and evening storms, fresh Okanagan fruits and vegetables, weddings, graduations, patio furniture, tiki lights, spring must be just about over. It’s almost time to dust off the pool noodles and lawn chairs, and set a course for the valley’s spectacular lakes.

As we anxiously await solstice and the ensuing summer fun, there are still a few more chances to catch the finest up and coming local talent:

Accentz Dance Studio is back at the Performing Arts Centre this Saturday, June 14 for two recitals.

The first is Once Upon A Time starting at 2 p.m. and featuring Accentz’ younger students (ages eight and under). Starting at 7 p.m., students of all ages take the stage for Accentz News Network.

Each show is packed full of a variety of dance styles including ballet, modern, tap, jazz, musical theatre, hip hop and more. Tickets are available for both shows, and two-show discount packages are available by calling the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

The Argyll School of Performing Arts joins our season of great local dance with Good Night, Sleep Tight Wednesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m. On stage, a babysitter lulls the children to bed and a night of dreaming begins. Performers of all ages dance through their starry-skied adventures using every imaginable dance style. Special guests from the Arran Campbell Memorial Pipe Band will also make an appearance in this delightful trip through childhood fantasy.

Coming up June 20, Charity Van Gameren Studio’s Young Stars are presenting Alice in Wonderland at the Powerhouse Theatre. Travel down the rabbit hole and join Alice’s adventures as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird tangles up with dozens of other favourite characters. There are two performances to choose from, starting at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and tickets are on sale now through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

On Saturday, June 21, the Okanagan School of Ballet presents Recital 2014 at the Performing Arts Centre. In this culmination of the dance season, students of all ages will highlight dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre, modern and hip hop duets, solos and group numbers. See the best of festival competition pieces with award and scholarship presentations also featured in the evening.

It all starts at 7 p.m. and tickets can be purchased through the Ticket Seller box office at 549-SHOW (7469).

And if you’re looking for something “less recital and more Elvis,” look no further than Bringing it Back featuring Adam Fitzpatrick on June 19. Well-known to Vernon audiences from his numerous appearances as Elvis with the Louisiana Hayride, this local favourite was the first runner-up champion in the recent World’s Best Ultimate Elvis Contest in Memphis, Tenn.

Adam’s band The Cadillac Kings featuring the Uptown Hornz are joined by Joe Kelso as Roy Orbison and Michael Fic as “Diamond Jones” (Neil Diamond and Tom Jones). A trip back in time that is sure to captivate, tickets can be purchased through the box office by calling 549-SHOW (7469).
