Mental Health Week starts on May 7, and those who spend time with patients are urging people to talk about their mental health issues.

Under the banner #GetLoud, the Canadian Mental Health Association is encouraging those affected by mental health challenges to share their experiences in hopes that those who need it, will reach out for help.

“One in five Canadians live with mental health problems, mental illnesses or addiction,” Julia Payson executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Vernon said Friday in a release promoting the campaign.

“Mental health is about more than being happy all the time. It’s about feeling good about who you are, having balance in your life, and managing life’s highs and lows. Everyone deserves to feel well, whatever their mental health experience. And we all need a support system to lean on,” she added.

In Vernon, the CMHA, in partnership with Mental Illness Family Support Centre is hosting a Block Party on May 1o at the CMHA Vernon office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be live music and prizes. On May 12, the CMHA will host Mixing it Up for Mental Health at Duralli Villa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The evening features live music, drinks and appetizers and a silent auction. All funds raised to support youth mental health programs and services in our community.

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at www.mixingitup.ca
