Dance for a cause

It's the 10th anniversary of Shake Your Beauty, a fundraiser for the Family Resource Centre

For 10 years, women in the community have been invited to dance their way to fitness and health while supporting a great cause, at Shake Your Beauty.

On March 21, come and enjoy dancing a variety of dance styles, from African to burlesque, while supporting women’s counselling programs at the Family Resource Centre in Vernon.

“Dance has been found to be very useful in assisting women to feel more comfortable in their bodies, obtain stress relief, and find enjoyment in the comfort of exercising with other women,” said Debbie Larson, who will be teaching a beginner’s African style dance. “Women can dance their way to fitness and health while having a blast discovering their inner groove.

“The dances are suitable for women of any age regardless of their physical fitness. The goal of the day is to go at your own pace, do as much or as little as you care to and, above all, have fun!

The day features three one-hour dance sessions featuring local dance instructors who are volunteering their time for this worthy cause.

The first class of the day will be beginner’s African style dance with Larson from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by belly dancing taught by Michelle Ferguson from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A light lunch will be provided during the lunch break.

The afternoon features burlesque jazz dance with Lisa Schofield, from Diversity Dance and Fitness from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m., which Larson calls “a sassy, fun way to end the day!”

Shake Your Beauty takes place March 21 at CMHA in Vernon, 3100-28th Ave. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for sign-in. Participants are asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring something to lay on the floor with during the final stretches.

“We will close with a 10th anniversary treat.”

The cost is $20 and pre-registration is required as space is limited. To register, call 250-545-3390.
