There will be dancing in the streets, well on the well-manicured lawn, when the City of Vernon and the Downtown Vernon Association (DVA) bring Civic Sounds back this summer.

The free Thursday night concerts, sponsored by Wentworth Music, are free to the public and are held on the grounds of the Civic Centre, located in front of the Vernon museum and library.

Refreshments and washroom facilities will be available until 9 p.m. for all shows and families are encouraged to bring their chairs and blankets to take in the live music in Downtown Vernon while the sun goes down.

“Come listen, dance, and socialize at Civic Sounds 2011, Downtown Vernon’s premiere live music event of the summer,” said Holly Schmidt, the DVA’s events and marketing coordinator

The series runs every Thursday night from 7 to 9 p.m. until Aug. 25.

The first band playing is Vernon-Kelowna contemporary rock band Orio, July 7.

“The three-piece band is comprised of Josh Evans on bass, Don Mutter on drums, and Tim Reardon on guitar,” said Schmidt. “They’ll be delivering a mix of classic rock and modern sounds.”

Other bands playing include Celtic-Maritime party band Cod Gone Wild July 14, The Shawn Lightfoot Band playing rockin’ blues July 21, and jazz-blues artists Kath and the Tom Kats July 28.

Classic-contemporary rock band Cheaper than a Porsche starts the August shows off Aug. 4, followed by fellow rock band The Goods Aug. 11, blues/classic rock/R&B collective Casual Sax Aug. 18, and classic rock outfit Mace finishing the concert series Aug. 25.

“On July 21 and Aug. 18, Civic Sounds will be hosting the Salvation Army food bank, with attendees encouraged on those days to bring a non-perishable food item,” added Schmidt.

Cash donations will also be accepted, and all donors will be entered in a raffle to be drawn at the end of both concerts.
