The Vernon Community Arts Centre was honoured this week with a visit by internationally famous potter Melis Van der Sluis.
Van der Sluis is a potter, art teacher and ceramic artist from New Zealand, where he works in his own studio producing pots, strata sculptures and earth crust bowls.
He participates in exhibitions and shows in many countries around the world and has just completed a tour promoting his new book about his life as a working artist.
The book is richly illustrated with photographs of his work dating back to his early days as a production potter.
At the VCAC, Van der Sluis engaged local potters with his wisdom and life lessons learned as a potter and entertained them with an impromptu demonstration of wheel throwing.
Van der Sluis says he was incredibly impressed with his visit to the arts centre.
“For a creative person to walk into the Vernon Community Arts Centre is like walking into a facility in Utopia,” he said. “Nowhere in my many travels have I seen a better community arts centre. Use it people of Vernon.”
