Ladies take to the tees at Hillview

When a group of avid golfers were looking for a way of celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, they did what they do best: teeing off at Hillview Golf.

“We had 13 lady golfers competing in a nine-hole, two-lady team competition,” said Jean Wetherill, who enjoys her regular Tuesday morning game with her friends at the 18-hole course. “Since 2000, more than 30 golfers have joined this Tuesday morning group, captained initially by Ruth Rikley.

“Our senior ladies are golfers who have gradually retired from the larger courses in Vernon and so Hillview really suits us. Our nine-hole competition soon evolved, and the transition worked for everyone.”

In 2008, Lorie Schenk took the reins of leadership, assisted by Barb Kent, who established handicaps from the Ladies B.C. Golf Association for the front nine holes. Wetherill said handicaps enable fair competition and encourage everyone to improve their game.

“All Tuesday golfers appreciate Hillview owner and manager Jim Atmore for enhancing our Tuesdays with his professionalism, humour and quick wit,” said Wetherill. “I would also like to acknowledge the ladies who are part of our group but not in the photos — Lois Jackson, Ann McKoryk, Joan Fullerton and Cory Danielson.

“The transition to Hillview has worked for everyone and it really is a gem in Vernon: locally, for visitors, tourists and all ages to enjoy golf, as a beginner or at many levels of golf skill.”

Wetherill added that new members to the Tuesday morning group are always welcome to take part.

“Just drop in and join us — we start at 8 a.m.”
