Loose Threads Quilting Group host quilt show to benefit North Okanagan Hospice Society

Members of the Loose Threads Quilting Group share their talents and treasures at a quilt show to benefit the North Okanagan Hospice Society on Saturday.

“There will be about 300 pieces with something from all our members, from the ones who have been quilting for years to some who have just started this fall,” said Carol Taylor, who has been quilting since 1970.

The show, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, will feature quilts of all sizes and quilted items like wall hangings, tote bags and place mats, as well as heritage quilts. some dating back to the 1930s. There will be demonstrations of machine embroidery, hand quilting and group quilting. The quilts will be displayed on walls and on beds, cribs and rocking chairs with the smaller items easy to look at.

“People will be able to take their time and see things well. This is something special for anyone who loves sewing and quilts,” said Barbara Haupt, a quilter since 2000 when she decide to treat herself to trying the craft.

There will a display of quilts by Queen Silver Star XLVII and former B.C. Ambassador Miranda Stankiewicz.

“Miranda has been quilting since she was four,” said her mother, Laura Stankiewicz. “I guess it runs in the family. I’ve also been sewing and quilting since I was a child. We’re all really looking forward to showing off our quilts and helping Hospice.

The group works together to make comfort quilts which are given out through the church to people in need in the community and send on missions projects. The 30 group members have intensive quilting bees in which they can finish up to 52 quilts in a day.

The Loose Threads Quilt Show takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 at Emmanuel Baptist Church (3412-15 Ave., Vernon). Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to the North Okanagan Hospice Society.
