It’s one of the most magical, beloved ballets of all times, and it is making its way back to Vernon.
Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is returning to Vernon with its major full-length touring production of Swan Lake.
The third show in the Vernon Performing Arts Centre Society’s 2016/2017 dance series, Ballet Jörgen will showcase the extraordinary beauty of traditional ballet in its purest form, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
As is often the signature of his work, artistic director Bengt Jörgen has re-imagined this most beloved of ballets to add a hint of Canadian heritage, setting this tale in the picturesque fortress of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia.
“We are committed to not only recreate ballet classics in a way that is respectful of tradition, but also in a way that is engaging for our modern audience,” said Jörgen.
With a cast of 16 dancers, this gem in the company’s repertoire is one of the largest ballet productions to grace Canadian stages from coast to coast.
The elaborate sets are designed by Camellia Koo, reflecting the beauty of Canada’s national heritage parks and providing a dramatic backdrop to Robert Doyle’s 17th century costume designs.
Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Swan Lake is a classical production in the truest sense of the word. It is the story of true love, the union of two souls and the ultimate sacrifice to be set free.
“I am so excited to do this work and be able to do it with the kind of incredible dancers that we have,” said Jörgen. “Swan Lake has an evocative and inspiring quality that makes it a pleasure and beauty to work on, and I’m excited about transferring that feeling to the people watching it.”
The recipient of the 2011 National Arts Centre award for distinguished contribution to touring, Ballet Jörgen is well known for its commitment to the recreation of classical ballets.
“The love affair with this company does not only apply to their Feb. 16 performance. Additional activities are being planned for interested participants including a limited master class that allows for one-on-one instruction,” said Brian van Wensem, audience development coordinator with the Performing Arts Centre.
