Ed note: The Vernon Community Arts Centre, which is run by the Arts Council of the North Okanagan, is once again recognizing its instructor of the month. Here is September’s selection:
It’s impossible to discuss top-notch instructors without mentioning the name Gail Short.
Short has been teaching painting classes at the Vernon Community Arts Centre for 17 years, and is gifted in a variety of painting mediums including watercolour, acrylics, graphite, ink, pastel, collage, mixed media, and even oils.
Her work is recognizable for its elegance and simple beauty, which comes from her passion and zest for the outdoors and her background in chemistry, physics and biology.
Short wasn’t always an artist.
“I worked in a bacteriology lab, but paintings have always called to me, ever since I can remember. I just never dreamt that I could learn to paint. You had to have talent to do that,” she said.
As for her teaching, Short enjoys sharing her experience and passion with her students.
“Learning to paint is a lifelong quest. It is never boring. There are always new avenues to discover and explore,” she said. “I love teaching. I meet so many like-minded people and have so much fun sharing techniques and ideas.”
Short extends her knowledge outside of the classroom, too.
She is very involved in the artistic community, always one of the first to volunteer her time for a variety of different cultural events.
Short will be teaching the following classes at the Vernon Community Arts Centre this fall:
–– Introduction to Watercolours: Mondays, Sept. 12 to Nov. 21 from 7 to 10 p.m.
–– Keep Your Brushes Wet: Mondays, Sept. 12 to Nov. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
