The 20th annual Horsey Ladies Charity Auction once again brought together a group of gals who love horses and who love to support their community.

The Nov. 17 event at Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club brought together 132 horsey ladies, and Shane Coates and his staff at the club went above and beyond in providing great service.

“They really go all out for us,” says 20-year committee member Nancy Roman. “They put out a fabulous traditional Christmas turkey buffet, along with vegetarian lasagna, salads and desserts — and do a lovely job with festive decorations.

“Last year we sold out in three weeks — this year it was in 10 days,” says Roman. “Over dinner we offer ‘open mic’ when anyone can get up and introduce themselves, or pitch for their favourite charity.”

More than 120 items were on the auction tables and brought in just over $8,000. The top two vote-getters were Freedom’s Gate Equine Rescue from the Salmon Arm area, and second was the BC SPCA Cruelty Investigations Department.

“There were quite a few charities ‘pitched’ that night, but these two were the most popular.”

Along with Roman, fellow committee members include: Elspeth Manning, Sheila Sperling, Donna McNab, Sly Keyes, Patti Thomas, Holly Wood, Kathy Woodward and Kathy Mydske. Their volunteer “auction tabulator” for the evening was Lisa Warren, with help from Sperling and Keyes.

The golf course also hosts a Toy Drive for the kids at Christmas and the horsey ladies never let them down.

“We would like to thank everyone that was able to donate this year,” said Roman. “You are so important to us and our cause and we are very much appreciative.

“We have mentioned all of our sponsors on our Horsey Ladies Okanagan Facebook page.”
