It’s been a season to celebrate for the Vernon Lawn Bowling Club.
The year began by having the club recognized as the Top Club in the Interior for 2011.
One reason for this honour, besides annually hosting the Funtastic weekend, was the club’s 24-hour Bowlathon which has raised more than $7,000 for United Way in the past two years.
This year’s Bowlathon event will take place on the weekend of Sept. 23 and 24, when organizer Dawn Perkins is confident that bowlers will raise a good deal more for charity.
The club’s evening bowling membership drive brought in new members ranging in age from 10 to 75. Those wishing to join bowlers on Tuesday or Thursday evenings are still welcome to try their hands at the sport. The first three visits, including instruction, are free.
Now that summer temperatures have fallen, morning bowling will revert to the afternoons. Beginning Sept. 2, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoon bowling will start at 1 p.m. while Tuesday and Thursday evenings will start at 6 p.m.
And the club’s crib players will sit each Wednesday and Saturday at 1 p.m., beginning Oct. 3. All visitors are welcome.
