Winery and erotic art honour the night

The fourth annual Okanagan Erotic Art Show will take place at Ex Nihilo Vineyards in Lake Country, running from  Aug. 31 to Sept. 28.

A juried show, various pieces will include jewelry, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, drawing, installation.

Participating artists are from Salmon Arm through to Kaleden, the Lower Mainland, and across the U.S., from Washington to New York.

The theme this year is based on Ex Nihilo’s own blend of wine, Night.

“When deciding on a theme for this year’s show, we wanted a connection between the winery and the art. The Edge of Night is a melding of the concept of making of a wine, in this case Night, and the art produced by artists,” said art show organizer and Kelowna artist Julia Trops.

“Ex Nihilo Night was created in honour of the mysterious balance the night brings to our vineyards,” said Ex Nihilo Vineyards proprietor Decoa Harder.

“The night is a special time that brings an element of sensual being and there is a always a story or two that goes along with that. During the jurying, we saw that every artwork provides a fantasy but it is up to the viewer to decide if they wish to participate,” said Fellow proprietor Jeff Harder.

“Of course, there is nothing better than what an Okanagan Night can bring you,” he continued.

“The Okanagan Erotic Art Show offers a venue for the racier side of the artist, and draws a non-judgmental crowd that attends knowing they might be titillated and entertained by something a little saucy, cheeky, sensual and erotic,” said participating Vernon artist Roxi Sim-Hermsen

“Last year’s opening was one of the best art openings I have been to/participated in.  The venue was lovely, the food divine, the artists open to each other and the crowd appreciative. The energy was electric and it was fun.”

“This year, 2011, there are about half Canadian artists, and half American. Because I had to turn so many overseas artists away this year, for 2012, the show will be open worldwide,” said Trops.

“As well, it will be exciting because due to the number of entries this year, I am able to offer prizes for Winery’s Choice, second, third and People’s Choice, chosen by opening night attendees.”

Opening for the Erotic Show is Thursday Sept. 1 from 7 to 10 p.m. and the attending public will have a chance to vote for the People’s Choice winner. Artists will be in attendance, and admission is by donation to Canadian Cancer Society in support of breast cancer research. All works are highly unique and original, and are for sale.

Ex Nihilo Vineyards is located at 1525 Camp Road in Lake Country and is open from 10-530 pm Monday to Sunday. For more information on the art show, please contact Julia Trops 250-215-0079 or, or the winery, Decoa 250-766-5522 or
