She’s played with musicians that range from the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia to legendary rock band The Moody Blues, and now Dr. Suzanne Snizek is bringing her talent and skills to Vernon for a flute recital and master class.
The Vernon Community Music School and the flute studio of faculty member Margaret Burton are hosting the University of Victoria flute professor April 30 for a short solo flute recital and master class.
Snizek received her undergraduate degree in flute performance at the University of Indiana-Bloomington. While an undergraduate student she was a winner in the national Flute Talk Magazine Competition. Her master’s degree in flute performance was completed at University of the Arts (Philadelphia) where she studied with Julius Baker.
While at University of the Arts, she won first place in the concerto competition, and subsequently performed the Jolivet Concerto. She also won second place in the New York Flute Club Competition and won scholarships to attend Colorado College Summer Music Festival, Walfrid Kujala’s (Chicago Symphony) summer master classes at Northwestern University and Julius Baker’s Danbury summer master classes.
Following graduation, Snizek performed with the ESO (National Orchestra of Taiwan). After returning to the U.S., she won first prize in the Mid-South Young Artist Flute Competition and became an active performer in the Philadelphia region, including the Harrisburg Symphony, Delaware Symphony and Trenton Symphony. She has recorded for Kindermusic, HBO television productions, and The NFL Presents for ESPN. She also performed with Roger Daltrey and served as co-principal flute of the Bel Canto Opera Company of Philadelphia.
After serving as senior lecturer in flute at the University of the Arts-Philadelphia, Snizek relocated to British Columbia and taught flute at Trinity Western University and Douglas College Community Music School. She received her DMA in flute at UBC in May 2011, and is currently an assistant professor in music (flute) at UVic.
As a scholar, she has contributed a web article on music in British internment during the Second World War for World Ort, as well as a chapter for Exilarte (forthcoming publication by Bohlau Verlag-Vienna, in 2012). In March 2010, she was a featured recitalist and presenter at Cambridge University’s conference, Creativity behind Barbed Wire.
Suzanne Snizek’s recital and masterclass takes place in the Carriage House at the VCMS April 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at the door. Three advanced students and a flute quartet will be performing for Snizek and she will give a short solo flute recital before the master class begins.
