A group of young musical theatre students are about to enter a magical world where cats and caterpillars talk and tea parties are all the rage.
Local musical theatre instructor Charity Van Gameren, just off directing a local production of Footloose at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre, is showcasing her studio’s younger musical theatre stars (ages six to 12) in the classic Disney tale, Alice in Wonderland Jr.
“This particular junior version is an hour in length, the perfect amount of sitting time for younger audiences,” said Van Gameren, whose studio is based at the Vernon Community Music School.
The musical follows Alice, who is bored with her school studies and wants a bit of adventure in her life. She finds more than she bargained for when she follows a white rabbit down its hole.
In this new world, Alice meets many crazy and wonderful characters as she chases after the White Rabbit.
“It is based on the Disney movie, so the audience will meet Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, The Cheshire Cat, have a mad tea party and come face to face with the infamous evil Queen of Hearts,” said Van Gameren. “The music that the cast sings and dances to is so much fun, it has been a wonderful score and script to work on with them.”
Alice in Wonderland Jr. takes the stage at Vernon’s Powerhouse Theatre Friday for two performances at 5 and 7:30 p.m. All tickets are available at the Ticket Seller box office. Visit ticketseller.ca or call 250-549-SHOW (7469).
